Professional Profile

Daoud Kuttab is an award-winning Palestinian journalist, media entrepreneur, author and advocate for independent journalism whose professional career spans more than four decades. Based between Jerusalem and Amman, his work has focused on Palestinian affairs, Israeli–Palestinian relations, journalism, freedom of expression, religion, human rights, community media and the role of independent media in societies affected by political conflict.

He is the founder of Community Media Network and AmmanNet, which began in 2000 as a pioneering Internet radio initiative in the Arab world and subsequently developed into an important independent community-media platform in Jordan. Community Media Network has operated Radio Al-Balad and AmmanNet and has worked to strengthen independent journalism, public dialogue and the representation of marginalised communities.

In March 2026, the World Evangelical Alliance announced Daoud Kuttab as its Senior Communications Officer. In this role his extensive experience in journalism, Middle Eastern affairs, religion, communication and media freedom intersects directly with questions concerning Christian communities and public discourse in the region.

Kuttab previously served as Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton University during the 2007–2008 academic year, where his teaching included new media and the Arab world. He was also the founder and director of the Institute of Modern Media at Al-Quds University, an institution associated with the development of Palestinian educational television and professional media training.

His journalism career began in Palestinian print media, including Al-Fajr and Al-Quds. Over subsequent decades he became a prominent commentator on Palestine, Israel, Jordan and the wider Middle East. His writing has appeared in major international publications and platforms including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, Haaretz, Arab News, Al-Monitor and Al Jazeera.

Kuttab's career has also included extensive work promoting press freedom. In 1996, the Committee to Protect Journalists presented him with its International Press Freedom Award in recognition of his defence of independent journalism and freedom of expression.

Alongside journalism, Kuttab has worked extensively in television and media production. He was involved in the Palestinian version of Sesame Street, known as Shara'a Simsim, a project intended to use children's television to encourage education, communication and mutual respect.

He is the author of books including State of Palestine NOW and Sesame Street, Palestine.

Presentation Overview

This presentation will examine Palestinian voices, the role of journalism and media, and the experiences and representation of religious communities within the complex social and political realities of Israel, Palestine and the wider region.

Drawing on Daoud Kuttab's decades of experience as a Palestinian journalist, media entrepreneur and commentator, the session will provide a first-hand professional perspective on how Palestinian narratives are communicated through local, regional and international media and how political conflict influences which voices receive public attention.

Particular attention will be given to the relationship between journalism, religious identity and community life. Christian and Muslim Palestinian communities occupy distinct yet interconnected positions within Palestinian society, while religious identity frequently intersects with questions of citizenship, nationalism, political representation, holy places, human rights and international media coverage.

The presentation will also consider the responsibilities and difficulties facing journalists reporting on societies affected by prolonged political conflict. These include access to information, media freedom, censorship, political pressure, competing national narratives, international news framing and the challenge of maintaining professional journalistic standards in highly polarised environments.

Kuttab's experience establishing independent and community-based media platforms provides an additional perspective on how alternative media institutions can create space for voices and communities that may receive limited representation through conventional political or commercial media structures.

The session forms part of the conference's broader effort to present Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Palestinian, Israeli and international perspectives without requiring speakers to conform to a predetermined political conclusion.
